Quick Lesson with the Pro

Most golfers would have stayed home on a cold, rainy May morning in the Hill Country. But at 7:45 a.m., eight FLGA ladies gathered around the practice green instead for the second session of the new “Quick Lesson with the Pro” series before their weekly Thursday game.

What began last month with a simple request from FLGA President Ruth Colvin — asking Head Pro Chris Meade for a short lesson on bunker shots — is already turning into a monthly tradition. The first session drew four golfers, while this month’s chipping lesson doubled in attendance, with players eager to improve their confidence around the greens.

This month’s focus was chipping — learning how to hit those delicate shots around the green that create better putting opportunities and take some frustration out of the short game. There were plenty of jokes about the weather, the layers of jackets, and the mismatched but warm outfits. Even Chris, who is well known for not enjoying the cold, embraced the chilly morning with the group. At one point, someone chipped one in and the entire group erupted in cheers and encouragement.

What was supposed to be a “quick lesson” stretched right up until tee time, as the ladies stayed longer to keep practicing. The relaxed atmosphere made it easy for everyone to ask questions and try shots they might normally avoid. Reflecting on last month’s bunker lesson, Ruth Colvin shared, “Once I learned the proper technique, I’ve been much more successful getting out of the sand.”

More than just instruction, the lessons have become another way for FLGA members to spend time together outside of competition. For women’s golf, opportunities like this make the game feel a little less intimidating and a lot more enjoyable.

If the first two lessons are any indication, the ladies of FLGA won’t mind setting their alarms a little earlier once a month. With growing attendance, plenty of laughs, and golfers eager for the next topic, the “Quick Lesson with the Pro” series is off to a great start. Next month’s lesson will focus on the driver and will take place June 11 at 7:45 a.m.
